Answer: Old Fort Sumner Cemetery. Today’s marathon drive started at our Lake Waco Marina and Campground stay. Our goal was to make it to Arizona. To stretch our legs, we made a pit stop here after 8 hours of driving.

I’ve only seen the films Young Guns (1988) and Young Guns II (1990) but I guess after this visit I’ll have to check out a few other movies about Billy The Kid.

Below reminds of a trip to Tombstone. Billy The Kid’s graveyard protected in… ironically, what looks like an outdoor jail cage.

Also buried here is Lucien Bonaparte Maxwell – one of the largest private landowners in United States history.

Scattered with quarters, cigarettes and a bottle of Jack Daniels seen at the grave.

Billy the Kid’s headstone had been stolen before… and, at one time missing for 26 years so now the graveyard has been blocked in this steel cage.

If you’re a fan of the stories of the Wild West, it’s worth a visit!

QUESTION: What areas of New Mexico have you traveled to that’s worth a detour?
