It's a birthday trip, a tradition to celebrate through travel and adventure.

Good to pack with layers in mind or bring a light jacket for a 2-night stay in Hilo during the month of March where they typically see lows at 65°F.

We have plenty of time before check-in so we had a quick nap and visit to Honoli'i Beach Park. It was a picturesque cove located less than 2-miles from downtown Hilo, where we watched a lone surfer pick his waves on this black sand, rocky bottom break.

Ken's House of Pancakes

Heaven's Door

Location: Ninole, District of North Hilo off Hwy.19 (Hawaii Belt Road)
Dates: March 20 - March 22
Check-in: 3:00pm, Check-out: 11:00am
2-Nights: $416.00 (including 12.43% GE & TA Tax, $100 cleaning fee, $135/nt)

A private driveway leads us to this quiet two-bedroom and two-bath home. An outdoor pergola with chairs to watch the koi fish in the pond. We didn't spend much time outdoors though with the mosquitos.

There's about 18 days of rain, on average, that pours just in the month of March. Hilo tends to be the lush-side of the Big Island. Heard it's "the papaya-growing capital of Hawaii." Look at the landscaping around the property. You can grow anything here.

Fireplace in the living room. Very cozy and spacious place... and soooooo quiet you can enjoy the sounds of the rain drops.

With the average March temperatures in Hilo from 65°F - 80°F, we used the sauna in the house quite a bit.

A unique feature of the home is being able to feed the koi right from the bedroom window. What a treat!

Looking forward to celebrating a belated birthday exploring Hilo... especially, going Ziplining at Umauma Falls!

[UPDATE: 2024 - Looks like this property was sold 2x (Aug 10, 2015 - $875,000 and Feb 3, 2021 - $735,000) since our stay and is no longer available in the vacation rental pool.]
