Near the end of March, it's still humpback whale season in Waikiki.
We jumped aboard Hawaii Nautical for a 2-hour whale watch tour on the "Sea Dreams 2" double-decker catamaran. They offered 1.5- to 2-hour tours ranging from $45 to $65/per person.
Originally, we had checked in for the morning tour at 9:15 am. Unfortunately, they had some mechanical issues which forced us to attend their noon tour. Plan B was simply to grab breakfast, take a nice walk to soak in the beautiful morning, and lie on the beach to catch some rays.
Noon rolled by and about 20 of us were ready to board. You are asked to take your shoes off before boarding, keeping the vessel clean. The captain discussed some safety features and a brief intro on what to expect on the tour, and off we went.
Right away we saw dolphins! Everyone was scanning the horizon for activity. We were fortunate as it seemed the ocean was a superhighway for humpback whales -- so many sightings and a spectacular breach only 10 yards away from us. Wow! It happened so fast and so silently until the splash. The camera and my reflexes weren't ready for it, but I'm glad I witnessed it.
The sun was beaming down, and they provided a cooler of refreshments and snacks. As the whale watching tour came to a close, we were asked if we wanted to continue observing whales a few more minutes or go in search of turtles.
Conclusion of our Hawai'i Nautical Tour
Everyone was satisfied today - dolphins, whales, and turtles, plus a calm day to sail under the sun. A+ 👍👍
