Introducing Bamboo Island (Koh Mai Phai)
Last March, we sank our toes into the soft sands on Bamboo Island... mistakenly named as the island was covered not by bamboo but with casuarina trees. This tiny island in the Andaman Sea was a great escape from bustling Koh Phi Phi Don as we arrived for our picnic lunch and snorkeled its vibrant reefs like it was our own private paradise. With a speedboat early bird start, you too can enjoy the island to relax, swim or snorkel.
The Best Time to Visit Bamboo Island: November to March for calm seas and clear skies.

Last Snorkeling Spot
Finished snorkeling nearby Pi Leh Bay, we've worked up our appetite for lunch.
11:00am – We've arrived at this white sand beach on Bamboo island. Beautiful! We head towards the Food Services area of the island which had provided picnic tables and some shade.
Lunch was included in our tour. It was chicken fried rice of sorts... a bit dry but we ate it all to fuel up for the rest of the day's exploring. If you brought cash, a quick visit to "Food Services" for a snack, smoothies (150 THB), and more...
11:20am – We finished lunch and started to explore Bamboo Island. We headed towards the northwest side of the island which looked very quiet and picturesque.
I don't know what the other tour goers were doing with our 2 hours on Bamboo Beach. With a short walk, we found a nice photo op with this tree swing.
We definitely chose to keep cool by taking a dip then snorkeling while no one was around.
Here we're taking a selfie and later I learned that we had Yung Island in the backdrop.
I think we made the right choice in an (Affiliate Link) Early Bird Phi Phi Islands Tour from Phi Phi by Speedboat. It allowed us to have a spot on Bamboo Island all to ourselves for about 40 minutes. We noticed 6 or so tour boats drop off all their passengers at once and it quickly filled out our blissful spot.
Highlights from snorkeling at Bamboo Island
- Black Knobby Sea Cucumber
- Cushion Starfish
- Blackeye Thicklip
- Giant Clams
1:00pm – It's time to head to Pirate Beach Cove to see the long-tailed macaques!
Here's the scenery as we leave the island. Wow! As you can see, many tour boats visit this wonderful island.
