Need ideas for a fun ocean adventure while in Roatan? Try snorkeling near Fantasy Island and the French Cay - the CoCo View Wall. Honduras is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System - the second-largest coral reef system in the world. It stretches from Belize, to Cancun through the Riviera Maya and up to Honduras.

There’s a variety of underwater wildlife to search for: sea turtles, tropical fish, eels, channels, and caverns... something different every time. Here’s a preview of what we saw.

ROATAN TOUR OPERATOR

On two separate occasions during our Caribbean cruise, we chose Roatan Ocean Adventures which operated outside of the cruise line service. They can pick you up at either port... whether you’re on Royal Caribbean (Coxen Hole Port) or Carnival Cruise Line (Mahogany Bay Port).

PROS

  • Offer a day with variety visiting with iguanas, sloths, capuchin monkeys, then a snorkel trip.
  • Get you back to the ship with plenty of time to spare.
  • $55 / per person for a 3-4 hour tour

CONS

  • On our first tour with Roatan Ocean Adeventures (9-27-2018), they didn't have the complimentary underwater photography as advertised. But on this snorkeling trip, they emailed a few (see pictures below). So, bring your camera of choice... to be safe!
  • Give tips specifically to those they’re intended for - from the driver to your snorkel guides. We've heard from staff that sometimes they don't receive the tips.

CAPAS Short and Adjustable Open Heel Snorkel Fins

We usually travel with our own snorkel gear. (Updated: Feb-2021) Since this snorkeling excursion, we downsized our fins to the (affiliate link) CAPAS Short Snorkel Fins which are small and portable which is great for travel. Although it doesn’t provide as much propulsion as longer fins, they’re great while exploring on the surface of the water… shallow snorkel excursions. Since it has the adjustable open heels, there is still room if your adventure requires neoprene booties… plus, easier to walk with!
