Roadside Attraction: Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch (Picacho, Arizona)

November 21, 2013 |

To keep on our journey to get from the west coast of California to east coast of Florida, we said goodbye to Monte Vista RV (Mesa, AZ) and hello to the Voyager RV Resort (Tucson, AZ). It was a 127.5 mile Arizona road trip this day. The Rooster Coburn Ostrich Ranch was the perfect roadside attraction to stretch our legs and right off Highway 10. Read More

The Rusty Spur Saloon and Art Gallery Scene of Old Town (Scottsdale, Arizona)

November 20, 2013 |

Originally, we were going to visit the City of Scottsdale to eat at Big Earl’s BBQ based on watching Travel Channel’s Man vs Food (Episode: Adam Goes for the Sides). But after talking to several locals, they recommended checking out Rusty Spur Saloon in Old Town. It’s described as, "the Oldest Cowboy Saloon in Scottsdale, with live music." The place had rave reviews on TripAdvisor (4.5 out of 5 stars). Rusty Spur’s menu had “The Best Tamale in Phoenix” on their menu. We had to see for ourselves! Read More

Porta Bote Adventure at Canyon Lake (Tonto National Forest, Arizona)

November 19, 2013 |

This is our first adventure on our Porta Bote (Portable Folding Boat). Excited! We had passed by Canyon Lake just yesterday driving through the Apache Trail Scenic Byway. We’re so happy that this 12-ft folding boat fit on our Thule SUP racks, plus the accessories and a 6-hp motor fit in the back of the Mini Cooper. Amazing! Read More

Pioneer Living History Village (Phoenix, AZ)

November 15, 2013 | 1

“…over 90 acres of an old 1800’s town…blacksmith shop, sheriff’s office and jail, to Victorian ladies… take a step back in time,” say the Pioneer Village website. It takes about 2 hours to walk around this Western town, including attending a short gunfight show. Our stroll in this dusty, desert landscape reminded me a lot of the TV series, Little House in the Prairie, I grew up watching.

Out of Africa Wildlife Park (Camp Verde, AZ)

November 14, 2013 |

4.5 of 5.0 stars on both TripAdvisor and Yelp. Not a zoo, you imagine yourself in the Serengeti as you tour areas of the park either on foot or by tram. The highlights of our visit were being kissed by a giraffe and camel, feeding tigers and petting a giant python, but also watching hyenas swallow their food whole and listening to the roars of the lions throughout the day.

Grand Canyon National Park (Grand Canyon Village, AZ)

November 13, 2013 |

Why visit the Grand Canyon? For activity junkies like us there’s the lure to hike, bike, mule ride, raft, whitewater, helicopter or experience land tours (bus, jeep or van). And, hello… how about just for its amazing landscape! Unfortunately, we had planned little time in the area and didn’t even know if the trip up would be doable. We’ve never been in Arizona for the winter and were worried about freezing weather… getting around in the RV. Read More
