You may recognize White Sands in the Movies – Young Guns II, Transformers, Transformers 2, Mad Love and Book of Eli (… the movies I’ve seen). We couldn’t pass through New Mexico without this pitstop only an hour from our RV Park.

Day 22 RVing: We’ve been driving 5 hours from Tucson to Las Cruces. We needed a much needed fun break.

Distance Traveled

~55 miles one-way from Coachlight Inn & RV Park

We arrive at Coachlight Inn and RV Park. Set up. And jump in our tow vehicle. We run into a hiccup. Our Mini Cooper’s battery is dead?

Luckily, the AutoZone was only 1.5 miles away. So we leave the Mini behind and RV to AutoZone to purchase jumper cables and Duralast Jumpstarter. We might need those items along the way anyway. So a 30-minute delay for our hour one-way trip to the World’s Largest Gypsum Sand Dunefield… 275 square miles of it.

I had called prior to driving to see if there would be any road closures. Good thing I did because their automated greeting stated they would close early… around 5:30pm… for Missle Tests. That’s right – MISSLE TESTS! Okay?! We left the RV park at 3:30pm and arrive at the White Sands National Monument at 4:30pm. Popped our heads inside the Visitor Center who give us the unfortunate news – we got a call and had to close the park at 4:00pm for Missle Testing. Oh no!!!

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

So we can’t partake with "The Dunes Drive, an eight-mile scenic drive, leads from the Visitor Center into the heart of the dunes. So what now?

We find somewhere to park outside the gate… Aha! There’s administrative office parking close by and there’s no signs saying we can’t park there and walk up some dunes. Cameras in tow and bundled up in 5 layers of clothing myself, I head towards the dunes.

I renamed the area “Snow Sands National Monument” as a recent storm had passed through and blanketed the dunes with a small layer of white crystal fun enough for a snowball fight!

Sounds like the adventure has truly begun what with the whole dead battery and early closure of your destination. Adventure for sure, for sure. Hope all goes well as you guys make your way east. Take care !
