Traveling the Globe
Originally, we were going to visit the City of Scottsdale to eat at Big Earl’s BBQ based on watching Travel Channel’s Man vs Food (Episode: Adam Goes for the Sides). But after talking to several locals, they recommended checking out Rusty Spur Saloon in Old Town. It’s described as, "the Oldest Cowboy Saloon in Scottsdale, with live music." The place had rave reviews on TripAdvisor (4.5 out of 5 stars). Rusty Spur’s menu had “The Best Tamale in Phoenix” on their menu. We had to see for ourselves!
This is our first adventure on our Porta Bote (Portable Folding Boat). Excited! We had passed by Canyon Lake just yesterday driving through the Apache Trail Scenic Byway. We’re so happy that this 12-ft folding boat fit on our Thule SUP racks, plus the accessories and a 6-hp motor fit in the back of the Mini Cooper. Amazing!
Why visit the Grand Canyon? For activity junkies like us there’s the lure to hike, bike, mule ride, raft, whitewater, helicopter or experience land tours (bus, jeep or van). And, hello… how about just for its amazing landscape! Unfortunately, we had planned little time in the area and didn’t even know if the trip up would be doable. We’ve never been in Arizona for the winter and were worried about freezing weather… getting around in the RV.
Want to return to the Old West? Then jump aboard the Grand Canyon Railway from the Williams Depot, like we did! Sure, we could’ve driven to the Grand Canyon on our own but to make it more unique and special, it’s always more comfortable to let someone do the driving. When in your life can you have an opportunity to experience a vintage train on a century-old rail line?
This morning’s mission is in search of a good breakfast burrito. One popular local joint nearby is Kono’s Surf Club Cafe in Pacific Beach. Not only attractive due to its location but prices. A breakfast sandwich (Eggs, bacon, cheese, tomato, mayo on toasted english muffin) is only $2.95. An egg burrito (Eggs, bacon, cheese, potatoes, pica sauce in flour tortilla) is only $4.95!!!
Day 2 RV-ing: Today we seek out a specialist to get a tow bar and InvisiBrake® by Roadmaster installed for our Gulfstream Montaj 29H to Mini Cooper. They’ll need our vehicles all day. How to pass the time? A day at San Diego Safari Park with Billy Jr. where we really enjoy the Ring-tailed Lemur Walk and Pygmy Falcon encounter.
I’ve always been under the impression that you’d need to have a minimum $5,000 budget to enjoy Africa. Is that true? How far is Africa anyway? If you fly all the way across the globe to get there, can’t we stay as long as possible? When is the best time of year to go? What airlines fly direct or with the least stops? So many questions and time to get some answers. (Illustration by Kenneth Gitonga)
The term ‘Big Five’ refers to five of Africa’s greatest wild animals – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Before humankind destroys their home or hunt them down to total extinction, we want to see these amazing creatures up close and personal.
