Another “Trip of a Lifetime” to see The Big 5 at Kruger National Park, South Africa with a quick detour to see Victoria Falls. We’re so excited!!! We planned 20 Days in Kruger National Park back in September 2013. We still have to get our last series of Twinrix (travel immunization shots for HepA/B) for the trip.
With plans to travel to (a) Johannesburg, South Africa (b) Victoria Falls, at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe and (c) Kruger National Park, South Africa it’s important to learn what immunizations are recommended and required for travel… even more …
The term ‘Big Five’ refers to five of Africa’s greatest wild animals – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Before humankind destroys their home or hunt them down to total extinction, we want to see these amazing creatures up close and personal.
Bill found two survival items while cleaning out his office: #1: Magnesium Flint keychain and #2: P38 (emergency can opener). Then, a lightbulb went off in his head. He remember how we experienced an Epic Fail in making fire while on safari in South Africa. It was as good a time as any to learn for future nature and wildlife adventures. See how he did with alittle imagination.
We heard about this Drive-Thru Safari Adventure from our stay at La Quinta Inn where we had stayed prior to our cruise. This morning, we disembarked our 11-night Southern Caribbean Cruise, from Port Everglades, with Royal Caribbean and had this last hurrah in mind instead of a straight ~ 4-hour drive back home. We’ve been to other wildlife parks but we heard that there’s more than just the drive-through safari to enjoy. After the drive, we could exploration other attractions on our two feet like animal feeding experiences, rides, water sprayground, and more.
In efforts of packing smart and traveling light with the Carry-On Only Movement (i.e. Western Caribbean and South Africa), I opted to leave my JBL Flip 2 wireless, portable speakers at home. If you’re a Macbook owner, you know how disappointing the speakers are. There just isn’t that oomph to enjoy iTunes and movies on the Mac. No longer! Boom 2 was well worth – $14.99.
A’Zambezi River Lodge was our gateway to experience all that Victoria Falls had to offer. Sunset cruises, fishing trips and such were located right on or beside the property. All of our tours provided pickup whether it was for our Canoe Safari on the Upper Zambezi River, Victoria Falls helicopter tour, or Morning Lion Walk… everything was convenient. The lodge didn’t disappoint as base to experience all this.
I’ve always been under the impression that you’d need to have a minimum $5,000 budget to enjoy Africa. Is that true? How far is Africa anyway? If you fly all the way across the globe to get there, can’t we stay as long as possible? When is the best time of year to go? What airlines fly direct or with the least stops? So many questions and time to get some answers. (Illustration by Kenneth Gitonga)
